Although there are many different types of sales jobs, conventional wisdom holds that extraverts are likely to gravitate towards “sales” and introverts are more inclined to seek out “staff” roles (e.g., finance/accounting, IT, administration, etc.). An analysis of average scores of large samples of people in these broad categories verifies this observation, as the chart below illustrates. This is not to say that a person will not be successful in a sales job if he/she has a low score on extraversion nor is it to imply that extraverts will automatically be successful. However, it does affirm that people in sales jobs are likely to score higher on this measure than will people in staff positions.
Extraversion is a personality trait. Traits are long-term and enduring patterns of behavior that affect us consistently over time and in a wide range of circumstances. However, we can learn new skills, insights and behaviors that allow us to leverage our strengths and natural inclinations as well as to help us succeed in situations that may not initially feel natural to us. For instance, introverts can be quite successful in sales jobs requiring a focused and detailed concentration, and persuasion based more on analysis and results than on force of personality. There have been several recent books for people who are more naturally introverted to help them develop the skills to navigate the more extraverted world of business successfully (for instance Quiet: The Power of Introverts… and The Introvert Advantage…).
